Pająki Chandeliers

Imagination should fly beyond the clouds

Polish mobiles were created from straw, paper, yarn, dried peas and beans, feathers and decorated eggshells. The literal translation of Pajak is spider. These elaborate handmade chandeliers hung in the center of the “Biale Izbe” - the white room’s ceiling, over the dining room table or Holy Corner. They would gently move or spin- suggesting that a spirit or ancestor was present. This place was a place of prayer where the soul was strengthened and renewed.

The pajak was not only a decoration, but held importance in family celebrations - weddings, Christmas and Easter. Straw possessed magical powers of energy, ensuring the family protection, happiness, health, fertility, prosperity and plentiful crops in the coming year.

Pajaki are deeply rooted in Polish customs and traditions. As I embark on this journey of discovery, my wish is to preserve, share and pass on my invaluable knowledge to the next generation.
